It is essential for the different types of passenger and freight transportations to integrate with urban logistics in order to create a sustainable city.

The Center d’analyse stratégique suggests initiatives with modest expenditures such as using rail, water or a combination of streetcar-trams to access cities in order to improve urban transportation of goods.

This policy brief makes three concrete and realistic proposals for a renewal of urban logistics. These are designed to support all stakeholders who work in research and development of sustainable urban freight transportation solutions.

1. Create a dialogue between all actors involved in freight sustainability in cities, identify courses of action based on the experiences in France and abroad and strengthen analyzing methods. This can be achieved by creating a national guide on urban logistics, intended for local elected officials, technical associations, and businesses.
    
2. Provide urban transit authorities the necessary skills needed to coordinate actions related to the transportation of goods and allow passenger transportation companies to transport freight too.
    
3. Initiate a "call for expressions of interest" on innovative practices relating to the delivery of goods in towns. Particularly, transportation by rail, inland waterways, pooling of logistical platforms or on a combination of solutions mixing passengers and freight.
