05/10/11

The TGV high speed train, is undoubtedly one of the most successful French technology. Holder of world speed record, it carries daily, for over thirty years, a large number of passengers - more than 108 million passengers over the whole of 2010 - recognized in conditions of comfort, reliability and security.

  • Tomorrow, the high speed rail in the world (Policy Brief 243 - October 2011)

Even if only a relatively small percentage (about 10%) of the rail market, it nevertheless remains a symbol of technological and know-how that reflects on all businesses who make them.

The TGV has been developed through close cooperation between the state, the SNCF and the companies that have designed, with Alstom as a leader. The opening to competition of the rail system, the emergence of new manufacturers, technology development in China, however, alter the deal, the French technology is now faced with competition increasingly fierce, especially from China. It can remain at the forefront in this market, but it will require effort, adaptations and innovations.

Our analysis is in the context of a continuation of the industrial adventure of high speed French and wondered how to extend it.
